If you are
- changing your job, but still working in local government, or
- working for another employer who offers you membership of the LGPS, or
- rejoining the LGPS before your deferred benefits are paid
your previous LGPS pension rights will either be automatically aggregated with your new pension or remain separate. It depends on when your deferred pension was awarded.
Deferred pension awarded before 1 April 2014
Your LGPS pensions will remain separate. If you wish your LGPS pensions to be aggregated, you have 12 months from rejoining the scheme to let us know. We will write to you to explain your options.
Deferred pension awarded after 31 March 2014
Your LGPS pensions will usually be automatically aggregated. If you do not wish your LGPS pensions to be aggregated, you have 12 months from rejoining the scheme to let us know. Your employer can allow you longer. This is an employer discretion. You you can ask your employer what their policy is on this matter.
If you opted out after 11 April 2015, you cannot aggregate your deferred pension with your new pension account. You start to build up a separate pension.
There is a lot to consider when deciding whether or not to join your benefits together. Contact us if you need further information to make your decision.
Transfer to another LGPS fund
If you move out of the Kent Pension Fund you should contact your new LGPS administrator to ensure they are aware of your transfer.
Transferred membership within the LGPS in England or Wales will normally count on a day for day basis. Membership transferred to Scotland or Northern Ireland may count at a different length.
