The LGPS was contracted out of the State Earning Related Pension Scheme (SERPS) and the State Second Pension (S2P). The period was from 6 April 1978 to 5 April 2016. This meant that most members paid reduced National Insurance (NI) contributions in this period. The scheme guarantees to pay you a Guaranteed Minimum Pension (GMP) for being contracted out. From April 2016 the government removed the reduction in NI contributions for all pension schemes.
